The hotel appears to be set up to suit the owners rather than the guests. It was a baffling experience. There is apparently only one member of staff, Mary, an older woman who had to have a rest after climbing two flights of stairs to our room, and informed us that she was going to put on the clothes dryer in the utility room next to us so it would be a bit noisy for a while (it was 7pm at night, why not earlier in the day?). There appeared to be a bar but no one to serve, and no idea of whether it was an honesty bar or not. We were offered a choice of breakfast at either 8.30am or 9.30 am which was not ideal, and although we got downstairs at 8.32am, we had to wait 15 minutes before Mary arrived who informed us that she had been there at 8.30 exactly but then had to make breakfast for the guests who'd arrived on time!! The house itself is beautifully decorated, the bedrooms large and comfortable but there was no milk or sugar on the coffee tray (and no one around to request some). In short, it could be a perfect bolthole in the city, but we were certainly left feeling we were inconveniences rather than valued guests. The Mansion needs additional staff and help for Mary who appears to have to clean, cook and take care of the guests on her own.

This was so much better than staying at a hotel. Very personable and friendly management that seemed to do everything from cooking to waiting on guests and receiving guests (like us) at all hours after midnight.
This is a legitimate British colonial, dark wood and spacious mansion. Wonder architecture and very well kept.
We will certainly stay here again - my only request is more parking please 😇

If your idea of a great time is to make your own bed and carry your own bags for $500/night then, by all means, book the Ryan Mansion! But Prince Charles slept here ... 15 years ago ...||When we arrived, the ONLY staff member was an older woman with a bad back who, while very friendly and apologetic, could not help carry bags up the 2 flights of stairs to our room. The next morning, she told us several of the rooms were turning over that day, and that she probably couldn't service our room. However, she did agree to provide us with clean towels and water when I asked. ||We had booked for 3 nights and she remained the only staff - her "helper" never showed up and the owner was "away". Breakfast was totally inflexible - only one main dish - a baked egg/soufflé dish that was tasty but needed to be eaten when it was taken out of the oven, so everyone had to be at breakfast within a narrow time window. On our last morning, we had to leave early, so we had coffee, juice, fruit and a piece of toast ... and breakfast at Tim Horton's on the way to our next destination.

Razzmatazz

We had booked a week's stay at Ryan through a booking site. Although they booking said we would not be charged and we would pay at the time of our stay, we were still charged one night's stay. After a few days we found a better room so we cancelled our booking (well within the cancellation period). However they would not refund our deposit ($450). We messaged them a couple of times but no response. Finally had to file a dispute with our credit card company who was able to resolve it for us. ||Disappointed, especially after reading the positive reviews.

Ryan Mansion is a majestic house with an old English charm. It is the opposite of a corporate hotel with cubes for rooms and impersonal service. Ryan Mansion is a unique, grand, swanky wood-clad venue and majestic place which has retained its grandeur in the huge fireplaces, large spacious hallways and elegantly decorated rooms. The bathroom was clean and big. The bed was extremely comfortable. The walks to the harbour, galleries, and surrounding parks are right there; no need to drive anywhere.

The host, Mary, or “MM” for “Brilliant Mary,” is welcoming, hard-working, and has the most adorable accent. She cooks the most unique local breakfasts, which we enjoyed in the quiet splendour of the Breakfast Room.

Robert, the proprietor, is polite, charming and friendly. His attention to detail and his décor of the house are astounding.

Highly recommended!

Would highly recommend a stay at the Ryan Mansion. This beautifully decorated inn is full of history and charm. It’s central location makes visiting points of interest easy- there’s lots to see and do within walking distance. Our room was inviting and comfortable with a luxurious ensuite bathroom and everything needed to unwind and relax. Robert and Mary were welcoming and thoughtful hosts; sharing the history of the mansion, preparing a special request breakfast, suggesting and making dinner reservations, and even serving an early breakfast before we left to catch our flight home. Would definitely consider a return visit.
