We stayed for 2 nights at the historic Captain's Quarters during a recent visit in St John's. Ideally located, only steps away from downtown, its free parking allowed us to explore the heart of the city on foot. Thank you for such a welcoming and comfortable stay to all the lovely and dynamic staff.

The owner of this establishment has charged my husband and his coworkers $8,000 for three weeks of stay while working to fix their power plant that supports that island with electricity. My husband and his coworkers paid for extra time as they was scheduled to fly out Monday. Normally we wouldn't mind about a day but with the rate that was being charged to these guys was well over 100/ night per person. My husband asked about getting a refund for the day seems how they all got rescheduled to fly a day earlier. The owner rejected to refund their money. So for future reference if you're in the area working you will be overcharged as most that are permanent residents only pay 800/ month. I would only pay on a daily basis when you know you're getting ready to leave. Horrible business practices. If any other company goes there to work on anything I would probably steer clear of this place and find something else for your guys I would start looking earlier for an Airbnb for an actual house that's more private that has a single monthly rate that the guys can divide and split.

This is a wysiwyg hotel: no frills, decent location, fair price and nothing fancy. I loved it.

Marcelo, the owner, is bluntly humorous, Julie, the check in girl was delightfully cheeky and friendly and the locals who drink here are good newfoundland folk who call a spade a shovel and tell it as it is.

The reviewer from Nova Scotia who resented being told to "go back there then" clearly hasn't spent much time in unfashionable dock side bars around the world where such insults from the locals are a commonplace mechanism for seeing if you have the character to stand up for yourself whilst also understanding the fact that economically poorer cousin counties, states and provinces usually feel shunned and looked down on by seemingly better off relatives.

If you mirror the apparent insult with warmth and humorous affection, you are welcomed with heartfelt affection that is real and courteous - what's not to like?

Absolutely WORST EXPERIENCE in my life. Was only place in the city with availability for that night. Checked in 11:00pm and requested late checkout option as it was so late when we arrived. Was told instead of 11, we could stay until 1:00pm with late checkout. Room was very stuffy, fan didn't work and when I propped the window open using the garbage can to keep it open there was no screen. Opened the night stand only to find a used IV needle, blood all over and inside of it. Next to the Bible to make the best of it. After paying 166.66 I assumed this was my bad luck...until I saw a tiny shrew scurry under my bed. nothing else had rooms available anywhere as it's george st festival week and regatta time. Stuck there I went to front Desk to complain and was brushed off and laughed at like it was no big deal. Requested to call the owner who was the nicest one I spoke to surprisingly and said we would talk when he arrived at 7am. He did offer us a free meal and when I went to order all they had was chicken strips (no name lol) and chicken balls that were freezer burnt and was told 6 minutes in the deep fryer makes them taste fine. When we woke up the receptionist was knocking saying checkout was in a hour (it was 9am) so I angrily went downstairs to find the owner only to find out he had already left by the manager. This man was the rudest person I've encountered !!! He laughed and said what do you expect in a hotel? Things happen and health care workers stay regularly so i need to calm down or leave. I did not calm down, had my child been there or we had touched it by mistake I would have been In rage worst so. Still have yet to be compensated or speak to the owner after numerous phone calls....advice : sleep in your car before staying here.

My husband and I came from out of town. We stayed in St. John's for only one night. We chose Captian's Quarters because of it being a historical building. We were not disappointed. The building is beautiful. The staff were very friendly.. Mike was wonderful.
