Commando Motel - Cochrane, Ontario

Accommodation during business trip. Very comfortable bed. Quiet even though on a busy thoroughfare. Dated looking building but room was fine and clean .

Don't believe what you see, girlfriend and I needed to find a place to stay for one night with our two dogs for our trip across Canada. We chose this motel considering reviews and price. We are used to tenting so we don't need bells and whistles when it comes to accommodations. We saw "recently renovated rooms." With non smoking and considering they were pet friendly we figured we found our spot. Office was posted as "open" but no one present, so I called was directed to a secondary number, eventually got a hold of someone who was by in 10 minutes to take my 80 dollars cash because "their debit machine wasn't working" which is in most cases understandable. After I signed a piece of paper that was only my name and phone number and also received no receipt for proof of purpose. (the daughter and mother) then left as soon as they me a keys to room number one. Room stinks of smoke, no renovations to be found except from maybe years ago, bed is dirty, pillows covered with dead flies, bathroom was deplorable, not at all what is advertised or posted on their Google ad. Unfortunate if it's all a misunderstanding. Called for 1.5 hours and left 3 messages 10 minutes after they left with no response. If there were an emergency with the room or motel, we would not be able to even communicate with an owner or manager even if we needed to. After finding another motel (same price for larger room and an extra bed, with 24/7 management service) I called first thing this morning just discuss the conditions and possible return of $80 because we didn't use any services offered by this motel including our one nights stay. I fully understand that this was a "pet friendly" room and required less attention cleanliness wise and may have been the only unit not to receive remodeling upgrades, but as a paying customer I deserve to voice my issues with management the moment it arises not 12 hours later and they have taken my money.
Also I can not find this motel listed under the Better Business Bureau which is alarming. Be safe travellers.

The new owner has really spruced things up! Rooms are very comfortable and newly renovated. Every effort was made to make our stay the best it could be. VERY reasonably priced and the service was awesome! Stayed for Thanksgiving weekend and also a weekend three months back. The new owner is continually making improvements to all the rooms.

Bed was very uncomfortable, didn't get any great sleep over three nights, breakfast was a coupon for A&W next door (only option was a greasy breakfast sandwich and greasy hashbrown). Room was clean and quite large. Motel staff were pleasant.

We received Great service - Prashant and his wife were really helpful and very accommodating. We Definitely would comeback and stay at this hotel again should we ever return to Cochrane thanks again for everything

the new owner, Clayton, is remodelling the rooms. very clean, and comfortable, at a budget price. Suited my needs. BBQ, and firepit are available. I will stay there again. Microwave, fridge, TV, comfy bed, clean, quiet and hot water. That is all I needed. Clayton also provided advice on local attractions and shops, as well provided plates and cutlery. He is trying very hard to make a go of it. No A/C, but has a ceiling fan which kept room comfy. Only real drawback was that there were too many pillows 😉

The owner here is new. She is a very kind individual who made my stay here even more enjoyable.

It may seem weird to give a small place five stars. But I keep in mind what I'm paying and what their offering. It was great! The room was nice, not huge, but nice. It was also VERY CLEAN. VERY VERY CLEAN. I work as a home cleaner in Calgary and she missed nothing. I was very impressed.

But that doesn't mean the owner was miserable or picky either. She was super-welcoming and prompt with any request. She even volunteered to watch my dog while I got things out of my car! (My dog really liked her too 🙂 )

The rate was totally reasonable. $75 for me and my dog (a German Shepard). And I only had to pay for the dog on the first night because of the extra cleaning time. Otherwise she only charged for me as a single person! Such a steal! And it's right in front of Commando Lake where they have these swans in the summer..

I don't give out five stars very often and there's been some places on this trip I refuse to rate because I don't want to be harsh. This definitely isn't one of them.

Considering you are paying a budget price don't expect the Royal York. The motel is not pretending to be a "Best Western", but for the cost difference a couple can go out for a very nice dinner including a drink. You should also remember that you are approaching the far north of Ontario and things generally are a lot simpler.||||I stayed at the Commando Motel mid July 2014 and found the motel satisfactory. Yes some things are a bit outdated, but everything was in working order. I saw NO security suggestions as someone from 2007 posted. I also left my car there while I took the train to Moosonee for an overnight stay and it was perfectly fine.||||The ownership has changed not too long ago and the new owner Barb, is very friendly and helpful. If I were to go to Cochrane again I would have no qualms to stay at the Commando Motel again.
