Janet Kidston is not your ordinary innkeeper! Opening the doors of her 1822 farmhouse to travellers, she opens the history book of the Kidston family and the land they have owned for generations. A fraction of the original acreage, the remaining land is jealously guarded and protected by Janet, and the garden club that preserves a section of it as an organic teaching garden. The house is full of original furnishings and artifacts, and probably a few friendly spirits as well. Janet regales her visitors with stories from the past, and one leaves with the sense that a part of history has come alive. The most fascinating B&B experience we've had!

What I have always loved about B&B's is the uniquenss and 'personal' touch. Over the years i've stayed at dozens, and Kidston is one of the best I have ever encountered. The house is overflowing with character and if that is not enough Janet is amazing. She entertained us for hours with stories of her family's history (including some ghost stories of the house). You drive down a regular city street, but once you turn into the yard you will forget you are even in the city in this green oasis. A truly unique and charming stay worthy of a vacation by itself.

We spent 4 days with Janet, and looked forward to our morning talks at the breakfast table, which came with a bit of history and artifacts. Each evening, we could not wait to tell her of our daily adventures. We spent time on the back deck having dinner with more stories and pleasant private time where you feel you are in the country but you are not. Janet is a wonderful hostess and we can't wait to return on our next trip to Nova Scotia.

Janet is the most amazing person and a wonder hostess. She knows everything about this home as it has been in her family since 1825. She regaled us with so many stories and back up each story with photos and artifacts. It truly was as if we stepped into a living museum. And we saw baby deer just outside our window, not too far from their mom. We were there in the fall and had fresh tomatoes from the garden as a special treat.

There is so much history in Halifax it is nice to stay somewhere that brings that history alive. The house, the location and Janet's easy going story telling make this B & B out of the ordinary. If you are looking for the real Halifax with it's proud history I'll find it here.

A good place to stay if you want to be close to Halifax. Excellent value for the price with very comfortable and clean room, and good breakfast.||Jane, the owner, loves to tell stories of her family every morning and she showed us a lot of old artifacts that the family has been keeping in the house for years.
