Woods End Landing - Bamfield, BC

BEWARE. I have travelled to over 50 different countries, stayed in wonderful lodges and boutique hotels all over the world, and I have never had an experience like the one with Glenn at Woods End Landing.

This summer Vancouver Island experienced one of its worst wildfires in history. The Mount Underwood Fire shut down the main highway into Bamfield and left the area without power for weeks. Both the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District and the Huu-ay-aht First Nations issued travel advisories asking visitors to stay clear.

We had saved up for months and booked Woods End Landing for a family trip with our one-year-old, grandparents, and dogs. With the highway closed, the only access was a dangerous back logging road with no cell service, frequent breakdowns, and active bear country. We read an article that police had 17 calls in a 24h period with flat tires, breakdowns, etc. Traveling under such conditions with a baby and seniors was simply unsafe.

We reached out to Glenn at Woods End Landing and explained our situation. Given the government travel warnings, we asked for a refund, partial refund, or even a credit for next season as we genuinely wanted to come and saved up for this trip.

His entire reply was a screenshot of the cancellation policy — no empathy, no acknowledgment, and no attempt at a solution. Since then I’ve followed up repeatedly, at the very least requesting a refund of things we did not use at all, such as pet fees, pet cleaning fees, parking, their quad rental, etc. He has ignored every message. Quite literally no response.

We paid over $5,000 and have received nothing but silence. I’ve traveled to 50+ countries and stayed in countless lodges and boutique hotels, and I have never encountered such poor and unethical service in my life.

I actually don't doubt Woods End Landing may well be a nice property, but the way management treated us was shocking. We feel we were taken advantage of, and I would strongly urge you to book elsewhere in Bamfield. It is a real shame for what seems to be a nice community of people.

I almost never leave Google Reviews, but felt this was worth sharing for those considering this property.

We came for a fishing trip and had a great three night stay. Well informed on our options for travel, arrival checkin and luggage assistance. Rachel was friendly and very helpful. We appreciated the common area including the fire and barbecue. Great to have a spot to moor our boat, clean fish and store our processed fish. Very relaxing trip. Thank you !

Beautiful picturesque landscape with quaint and comfortable cottages. Very friendly and helpful staff and locals. Had a few questions with directions and they always answered phone right away and provided important advice.
Board walk is lovely to stroll. Delicious restaurant 10 min walk away. Amazing hiking 5 minute drive away.
Highly recommend!

Our party of two enjoyed a six night stay last summer at this picturesque resort. We hauled our large double kayak on our truck over the gravel road from Port Alberni and parked the truck for the week on the east side of Bamfield. The owners were watching out for us and quickly sent over a boat to take our belongings the short distance across the inlet to Bamfield West and their dock. Once we were established into our cozy cottage accommodations, we commenced with six day trips of fabulous kayaking and wildlife viewing, including whales, over to the Deer Group Islands and the surrounding Vancouver Island coastline. The gracious owners Sherry and Alex offered all the services and hospitality we needed and more. One day they brought us some fresh crab, and let us use their boat washing facilities. Another day their son, Eric, took our kayak and us over to some more distant islands and picked us up later in the day for a very reasonable taxi fee. We relished the luxury of returning to our cottage each night. The kitchenette in Berry Cottage had all the basics and a full size refrigerator. The cottage all-around was comfortable with basic needs met, and we enjoyed the front porch daily. The other guests that week were all friendly fishermen and enjoyed showing us their catch as they cleaned them on the dock. The ease of launching, storing and washing kayak gear using the Woods Landing dock was a big plus for us! An overnight island camping side trip would be easy to organize. Overall the trip exceeded our expectations and we would definitely come back to Sherry and Alex and Woods Landing again!

Our time at Woods End Landing was delightful. We got lucky with warm weather and placid waters but really it would be nice to go there during a storm, it was just such an interesting area to explore. Brady beach is the most beautiful beach I've been to and walking down the boardwalk to the store was a true Bamfield experience. Kids loved it. What made the trip to west Bamfield special was our host. Sherry was awesome and shes one of the reasons we'd go back as we felt so well taken care of. Sherry and her family made sure that our cabin was comfy cozy and very clean. The kitchen was loaded with amenities and the bed was of great quality allowing us a really deep and satisfying sleep. The gazebo is so cool. Made with driftwood it was our hub when we needed to use the wifi. We loved everything about our adventure. Thanks Sherry!

Before we even got to Woods End Landing we knew our hosts were very accommodating and genuinely good people. We would have been arriving very late on the Friday night and Sherry very graciously offered for us to stay at their home in Port Alberni so we did not have to launch and arrive in the dark by boat or drive 2 hours down an awful gravel road notorious for taking your spare tire, and then "the other spare" one should have on hand as well for this particular road. They didn't charge us for the first night we missed at the cabin (even though it was our own fault we would have been arriving late) and for them to offer their home to people they had only spoke to on the phone exhibited amazing customer service and courtesy. ||||When we arrived Saturday, Sherry greeted us at the dock with her son Eric and helped us unload everything from our boat and drove our luggage etc. up to the cabin with their quad and trailer. My husband, myself and three of our friends stayed in the "Mariner" cabin which had everything we needed and more, it was clean and very well equipped. The themes and decor for each cabin were great! The boardwalk that takes you up to the cabins is surrounded by beautiful flowers and foiliage and each time you walk up or down to the water you see something new (and slowly get into shape while doing so!)||||The closed in and covered "common area" coming up the walkway before the guest cabins was equipped with a BBQ and a lovely propane fireplace/ sitting area as well as an open fire pit outside as well. It had great ambieance and was an awesome place to unwind after a long day on the water. They had everything that a person could need to feel right at home. It was also great just visiting and getting to know Andy, Sherry, Eric, and also their hired hand Wyatt around the fire. Andy and Sherry are very knowledgeable about Bamfield and the surrounding area, and are very friendly people who you instantly feel comfortable around. Wyatt is a 16 year old who aspires to be a guide and I have no doubt that he will be one of the best in the business in the future! We took him out on our boat the last day and we started catching some serious fish! He took us to "zipper mouth rock" (as if I would give away his secrets...we plan to come back to this amazing place and need to stay in his good books...) ||||Woods End has a great fish cleaning/storage setup and is very well organized for anyone fishing while staying here. We felt totally comfortable leaving our belongings on the dock and boat. ||||This family has done an amazing job and the amount of dedication and hard work they have put into this place is easily recognizable. We couldn't have asked for a better experience staying here and would highly reccomend booking a getaway to Woods End. We would love to come back!

This was our first time staying at Woods End and will not be our last. Right from the very start our experience was excellent. Sherri and Andy are the very best hosts you can imagine. As we arrived at their well maintained dock both Hosts greated us on the dock, grabbing my lines and helping me posotion my vessel. Their service continued from there - helping us unload our gear and take it to our cabin door. The cabin was perfectly maintained. Everything was excellent to the point that you would expect from a high end downtown Vancouver hotel. The best part was their willingness to help us find the best places to fish and what gear to use. They are perfect hosts and you are treated better than family. I hesitated to write this review as I am certain when others find out how nice this place is, I will have trouble getting my dates in the future. Dont hesitate to stay at Woods End - you will love it! ||Mark and Mark
